Addressing Easter Traffic Challenges in Switzerland

Addressing Easter Traffic Challenges in Switzerland

To tackle the anticipated traffic congestion during the Easter holiday period, innovative measures are being implemented in various regions of Switzerland. Among these strategies is the unique approach adopted by the Canton of Graubünden, which involves the creation of artificial traffic jams to alleviate congestion and ensure smoother travel experiences for both locals and tourists.

Graubünden’s Proactive Approach

In response to the expected surge in visitors to popular Swiss destinations, particularly during Easter, Canton Graubünden has taken proactive steps to manage traffic flow effectively. Recognizing the potential strain on local roads, authorities have devised a plan to encourage tourists to utilize main highways rather than smaller local routes.

Strategic Placement of Barriers

The key aspect of Graubünden’s strategy involves strategically placing barriers along a designated regional road, M13, which runs parallel to the busy A13 motorway traversing the Alps via the San Bernardino Pass. These barriers will be manned by traffic personnel who will deliberately delay groups of vehicles before entering towns and villages along the M13.

Simulating Traffic Backlogs

By orchestrating these delays, authorities aim to create simulated traffic backlogs, giving the impression of congestion to both drivers and navigation systems. The objective is to influence drivers to remain on the main highway, thereby minimizing disruptions to local traffic flow and easing congestion in the region.

Building on Past Success

This initiative builds upon previous successful implementations within the region. In May 2023, the town of Domat / Ems employed a similar tactic, deploying traffic wardens to deliberately slow down traffic entering the town via the M13. While initially met with some resistance from local drivers, the strategy effectively deceived navigation systems and contributed to easing genuine traffic congestion.

Comprehensive Traffic Management

In addition to Graubünden’s initiative, other Swiss cantons are implementing comprehensive traffic management measures to address the anticipated Easter traffic surge. For instance, Uri aims to prevent traffic from spilling onto local roads from the Gotthard, while Canton Nidwalden plans to utilize traffic lights and potential exit closures on the A2 motorway if congestion becomes unmanageable.
