Blood Rain in Switzerland: What You Need to Know
Switzerland is about to experience a rare weather event called “blood rain.” This happens when dust from the Sahara Desert mixes with rain, making it look reddish. Here’s what you need to know.
Saharan Dust Arrives on June 20
Starting June 20, hot weather will bring Saharan dust to Switzerland. The weather on June 19 will be sunny, with temperatures between 28 and 30 degrees Celsius. The next day, a strong southwest wind will carry the dust across the country.
The dust from the Sahara Desert is made of tiny particles like aluminosilicates, quartz, and iron oxides. These can be irritating for people with asthma or allergies. The sky might look milky or even orange, especially at sunrise and sunset.
What is Blood Rain?
From late Thursday, heavy rain and thunderstorms will mix with the Saharan dust. This mixture creates “blood rain,” where the rain appears reddish. This can leave sandy puddles and may stain clothes.
Despite its scary name, blood rain is mostly a problem for car owners. The dust can scratch car paint, so it’s important to wash your car carefully after it rains.
Weather for the Next Few Days
The weather in Switzerland will be stormy for the next few days. Thunderstorms are expected to be strongest on Friday and Saturday. Temperatures will drop from Thursday, staying between 17 and 21 degrees Celsius for the rest of the week.
Take care of your cars and be prepared for some unusual weather!
