Important Changes to Dog Law in Zurich!
Zurich is getting new rules for dog owners. The “Dog Law” (Hundegesetz) will be in effect within the next year.
What’s New in the Dog Law?
The Veterinary Office of Canton Zurich has confirmed the new dog law is finally ready. It was approved in 2021, but a legal challenge from dog instructors delayed it. The challenge was about a new exam requirement for dog instructors, but the Federal Supreme Court rejected it.
What Changes for Dog Owners in Zurich?
Here’s what will change with the new dog law:
- Dog Training Required: All dogs, no matter their size or breed, must now complete dog training to live in Zurich. Previously, only certain dogs were required to train. Now, owners of all dog breeds, from beagles to chihuahuas, will need to enroll their dogs in training courses.
What Type of Training is Needed?
- Puppies (8 to 16 weeks old): Must attend at least 4 puppy training sessions and 10 young dog training sessions.
- Young Dogs (16 weeks to 18 months old): Need young dog training and 10 regular dog training sessions, unless they have completed puppy training.
- Adult Dogs (18 months to 8 years old): Must complete regular dog training. Dogs older than 8 years do not need training.
More Trainers and Training Locations
To handle the increased number of dogs needing training, Zurich will add more dog training centers and trainers. These new trainers must pass both a theory and practical exam.
When Does the New Law Start?
The new dog law will begin by mid-2025. Leash rules for forests, vaccination, insurance, dog tax, banned breeds, and registration rules will stay the same.
