In 2024, Swiss health insurance premiums are set to go up by about 6%, and some may increase by as much as 10%.
Last year, Swiss health insurance costs went up by an average of 6%, and it’s expected to be similar in 2024, with some premiums possibly going up by 10%, according to Comparis, an online price comparison portal.
The federal health ministry reported that general healthcare expenses increased by 2.6% last year. The increase in the first quarter, as reported by the federal health ministry, is higher than the previous quarter, as mentioned in the Comparis summary.
Health insurance expert Felix Schneuwly, quoted in the Comparis release, said that without the mandated reduction in reserves, premiums would have risen by only about 2.5% per year per person in recent years, and they’re expected to continue in this range.
The reasons for the cost increase include the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, more administrative work, a lack of affordable medicines, more psychotherapies, the nursing initiative, and increased treatments for uninsured individuals.
However, these cost increases are expected to level off. According to Schneuwly in the Comparis release, the cost of medical services covered by basic insurance is likely to stabilize at around 3% in the coming years.
The final announcement regarding the health insurance premium increase for 2024 will be made in September.
