July 2024: 10 Important Things to Know in Switzerland
With kids on holiday and parliament on a summer break, you might think things slow down in Switzerland. But there are still many important things to know.
Here are 10 key events and changes for July 2024:
1. Medicines Becoming More Expensive
From July 1, many common medicines in Switzerland will cost more. This is due to a new pricing model by the Federal Office of Public Health. While it aims to reduce overall costs, cheaper medications will see price increases.
2. Severe Traffic in Swiss Alps
A landslide has damaged a 200-meter section of the A13 motorway, a key route through the Swiss mountains. Expect heavy traffic on alternate routes, especially the Gotthard Road Tunnel. The Federal Roads Office hopes to reopen at least one lane in each direction by July 10.
3. Disruptions to International Train Travel
Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) warns of disruptions to international train services due to maintenance work in other countries. Replacement buses are in use between Geneva-Milan and Lausanne-Milan until August 8. Other routes like Basel-Hamburg and Zurich-Stuttgart will also face interruptions.
4. New Definition of Sexual Assault
Starting July 1, Switzerland will change its laws on sexual assault. The new “No is no” law requires clear verbal or demonstrative consent for sexual activity. The new rules will broaden the definition of rape and sexual violence.
5. Increase in Swiss Milk Prices
To support dairy farmers, the price of cow’s milk will rise by three rappen (cents) per liter in July. However, the cost of cheese will remain the same.
6. Changes to Train Announcements
SBB will modify announcements related to train delays due to suicides. Instead of citing a “personal accident,” the announcements will now mention an “event linked to an external cause.”
7. New Car Safety Requirements
From July 7, new cars in Switzerland will need to have 15 safety and assistance systems as standard. These include emergency braking assistance and forward vehicle monitors. Older cars do not need to have these systems retrofitted.
8. Swisscom Subscription Upgrade
Starting July 24, Swisscom will automatically upgrade users with an inOne home light subscription to a new “Basic Home” plan. This plan offers faster internet but will cost 9.90 francs more per month.
9. Summer Holidays in Switzerland
Most Swiss schools will start their summer holidays by early July. Many Swiss families are planning holidays abroad, but there are plenty of fun activities to enjoy in Switzerland too.
10. Taylor Swift Concerts and Other Events
Taylor Swift will perform her first concerts in Switzerland on July 9 and 10 at Stadion Letzigrund in Zurich. Other big events this month include the Montreux Jazz Festival, Openair Frauenfeld, Zurich Openair, and many more.
Enjoy your summer and stay informed about these important changes and events!
