Swiss Flooding Update: 4 Dead in Landslides and Safety Tips
Four people have died in southern Switzerland due to heavy rain causing flooding and landslides. The worst-hit areas are Valais and Ticino.
Heavy rain triggered a landslide in Fontana, Ticino, while in Cevio, a bridge collapse blocked traffic and made rescue operations harder. Swiss authorities evacuated hundreds of people in Valais after the Rhone River flooded, but they say the situation is now “under control” yet still risky.
Swiss leaders Viola Amherd and Christian Vitta will visit Ticino and Valais today to assess the damage.
How can locals stay safe?
Police advise staying home, listening to the radio for updates, and avoiding basements and underground parking. Stay away from flooded areas if you must go out, and don’t bike or drive through flooded streets.
