Swiss Parliament’s Autumn Session: Top 4 Priorities

Swiss Parliament’s Autumn Session: Top 4 Priorities

The Swiss parliament is meeting from September 11 to 29, just before the October 22 elections. Here are four big issues they’re talking about:

Health Insurance Costs

They want to control the rising costs of health insurance. They’re discussing a plan where people wouldn’t pay more than 10% of their income for insurance. If it’s higher, the government and canton step in. They’re also considering ideas like letting insurers use data to help people save money and changing how discounts work.

Climate Action Incentives

After a failed vote on a CO2 law, they’re looking at new ways to fight climate change. One idea is putting solar panels on new buildings, but there’s no agreement yet. They’re also talking about water regulations and getting all electricity from renewable sources.

Arms Exports

There’s a debate on allowing arms exports, even though Switzerland is known for neutrality. They’re also deciding whether to sell tanks to Germany, with a promise that they won’t end up in Ukraine.

Tobacco Advertising Ban

To protect kids, there’s a plan to ban tobacco ads in print by 2026 and stop tobacco companies from sponsoring events with kids. But some want exceptions, like allowing ads at adult-focused events even if kids are there.
