Swiss Post Diversifies Services with Launch of Post Mobile: A Game-Changer in the Telecom Arena

In a strategic move to adapt to evolving market dynamics and enhance its revenue streams, Swiss Post has made a noteworthy foray into the mobile telecommunications sector with the launch of Post Mobile. This venture aims to provide cost-effective mobile phone services and data plans, making the postal service more competitive and appealing to a broader consumer base.

Expanding Horizons:

Swiss Post’s Post Mobile is not just a simple addition to its service portfolio; it represents a significant expansion into the telecom industry. This move comes two decades after the postal service first ventured into the sale of mobile phones and landlines within its stores. Now, with the introduction of Post Mobile, Swiss Post is set to offer comprehensive mobile phone packages, available both in post office branches across Swiss cities and online.

Tailored Packages for Every Need:

The Post Mobile packages cater to diverse consumer needs, designed specifically for price-conscious individuals seeking affordable mobile access. Starting at just 14.95 francs per month, users can enjoy unlimited calls, texts, and eight gigabytes of data within Switzerland. At the premium end, a 49.95 francs per month package provides unlimited talk, text, and data within Switzerland, international calls and texts in Europe, and substantial data allowances for both Europe and a designated “Travel” zone encompassing 31 countries and territories worldwide.

Leveraging Salt’s 5G Network:

Post Mobile has strategically partnered with Salt, utilizing its robust 5G network that covers an impressive 99.9 percent of Switzerland. This partnership ensures reliable and high-speed connectivity, placing Post Mobile at the forefront of the telecom landscape.

Impact on Competitors:

The decision by Swiss Post to discontinue the sale of mobile deals from other companies has sent ripples through the industry, affecting providers like Swisscom, Sunrise, and Salt. These companies traditionally sold a substantial number of mobile subscriptions at post offices each year, making this shift a significant game-changer in the competitive telecom market.

Strategic Vision and Market Response:

Thomas Baur, Head of Postal Branches at Swiss Post, emphasized that the move aims to make the post office more attractive, thereby enhancing its overall profitability. This shift comes as Swiss Post faces financial challenges due to a decline in traditional letter shipments, prompting discussions about potential service adjustments.

Navigating Regulatory Waters:

As a publicly-run entity, Swiss Post’s entry into the telecom sector has raised questions about competition with private companies like Sunrise and the state-owned Swisscom. Baur clarified that Swiss Post can “arrange services on behalf of third parties,” and the technical operation by Salt ensures compliance within its defined mandate.

The launch of Post Mobile marks a pivotal moment for Swiss Post, signaling a strategic shift towards diversification and innovation. As the postal service embraces the dynamic landscape of telecommunications, Post Mobile is poised to capture a significant share of the market, offering affordability, reliability, and a fresh perspective to consumers. Only time will tell how this move will shape the future of Swiss Post and its standing in the competitive telecommunications arena.
