Swiss Supermarket Launches Tear-Free Brand of Onions
Onions are a kitchen staple, but chopping them often comes with tears and stinging eyes. Whether you wear goggles, wipe your eyes with a towel, or rinse them under water, preparing onions is a task many dread. Now, Swiss supermarket Coop has launched a solution: tear-free onions.
Tear-Free Onions Hit the Shelves in Switzerland
Coop has introduced “Sunions,” onions that promise to eliminate the tears without losing flavor. The Sunions brand says, “With Sunions, the only thing you’ll shed in the kitchen are tears of joy!” The onions are available at Coop stores across Switzerland. They’re described as aromatic, delicious, and perfect for hearty dishes.
The Story Behind Sunions
The idea for Sunions started five years ago. Swiss farmer Alex Hofmann first read about tear-free onions online. Intrigued, he decided to grow them. Now, Hofmann has cultivated these onions on four farms in Switzerland.
A Flavor Trade-Off?
While Sunions are tear-free, they lack the spicy punch of regular onions. Hofmann explained that the enzyme responsible for the spiciness has been bred out. This makes Sunions gentler on the eyes, but less flavorful.
Chef Richard Pohler from Zurich weighed in on the new variety. “These onions don’t taste like much,” he said. “They’re fine for fried onions or onion jam, but I prefer traditional varieties for most dishes. I want that classic onion aroma.”
Still, for those who dislike the strong flavor or spiciness of regular onions, Sunions offer a mild alternative.
A New Chapter in Onion Cultivation
Sunions may not replace all onions, but they offer an exciting new option. For cooks who want the convenience of tear-free onions without sacrificing too much flavor, this new variety could be the perfect solution. Next time you’re chopping onions, you might reach for a Sunion and skip the tears.
