Switzerland will start using a new electronic highway vignette on August 1.
In addition to the traditional sticker vignette, Switzerland will begin using a new motorway e-vignette on August 1, 2023. The e-vignette can be purchased at any time from the Federal Office of Customs and Border Security (BAZG) portal online; the website is scheduled to go live at the beginning of August. It will be electronically linked to the vehicle’s registration and license plate.
The vignette sticker is still in use for the time being, but it might be eliminated later.
For the time being, both the traditional sticker vignette and the electronic vignette will be used. If sales drop below 10% of vignettes purchased, the nation might eventually completely do away with the physical sticker. The National Road Tax Act was revised, and this decision was made by the Swiss parliament as part of that revision, which also goes into effect at the start of August.
Politics in Switzerland have been divided for a while over how to check the new e-vignettes. As of right now, the BAZG and law enforcement can conduct automated random checks using mobile devices and traffic monitoring systems. When dangerous driving occurs, authorities may also check particular drivers using e-vignettes.
Switzerland’s highway vignettes.
To operate a vehicle on a highway in Switzerland, a vignette must be purchased and displayed on the front windscreen. The new e-vignettes will have the same price and validity as the stickers, which cost 40 Swiss francs and are valid for one year. The money made from the sale of (e-)vignettes goes toward maintaining the nation’s highways.
